University of Limerick Campus
Landscape, Urban Design, Environment, Biodiversity, Arboriculture
BSM has worked with the University of Limerick since the campus was established in 1972, providing landscape architecture, landscape management and masterplanning services across its full development. From the outset, the focus has been on creating a campus environment that works for students: attractive, legible routes that encourage movement on foot, spaces that feel safe through natural surveillance and clear sightlines, and planting and habitat design that supports biodiversity alongside everyday campus life.
As the university has grown, BSM has helped integrate each new phase of development into the established campus character, ensuring new buildings and infrastructure sit within a coherent landscape rather than disrupting it. Recent projects include the landscape design for the new Student Centre, a focal point for campus social life, and the UL Memorial Garden, a permanent place of quiet reflection for the university community to commemorate departed members of UL.
The relationship spans over fifty years and covers the full spectrum of campus landscape work, from strategic masterplanning, biodiversity enhancement, arboriculture to detailed planting design and landscape management. It's the kind of long-term institutional partnership that only works when the landscape approach is genuinely embedded in how the campus thinks about itself.
